This artwork is based on the jazz singer Barbara Long.

She only released one record in the 1960s, and information about her remains scarce to this day.

I encountered that record when I was 20 years old, wandering aimlessly in a CD shop in an unfamiliar city's back alley. Even as the devices I carry around have changed—CD players, iPods, smartphones—that one record has always been with me.

I was simply happy to finally be able to paint her, someone I'd always wanted to portray.
